Well Water in Rural Ottawa: A Homeowner's Maintenance Guide

If your property draws from a private well, you are your own water utility. Nobody else is testing it, treating it or monitoring it. The good news is that a well in the Ottawa valley is entirely manageable once you know what you are dealing with.

Test annually, at minimum

Ontario public health units offer free bacteriological testing for private wells, and you should use it at least once a year, plus after any flooding or well work. Chemical testing for hardness, iron, manganese and sulphur is what determines your treatment equipment, and that is the assessment we perform on site.

Iron and manganese staining

Orange staining in toilets and tubs means iron. Dark brown or black staining means manganese. Both need to be removed before softening. Putting a softener in front of an iron problem is the most common mistake we are called out to correct.

The sulphur smell

Hydrogen sulphide produces that rotten-egg odour, sometimes only on the hot side. It is unpleasant rather than dangerous in most concentrations, and it responds well to oxidising filtration.

Sediment after heavy rain

Spring melt and heavy rain can pull silt into a shallow well. A properly sized sediment stage with pressure gauges lets you see when a cartridge is loading up rather than discovering it when pressure drops in the shower.

A simple annual routine

Check the salt level in your brine tank monthly. Change sediment cartridges on schedule or when the pressure differential grows. Replace RO membranes as recommended. Book a bacteria test each spring. Note the pressure and flow you consider normal, so you notice when it changes.
