Rotten Egg Smell and Rusty Stains: Treating Iron and Sulphur in Ottawa Well Water
Iron stains and a rotten-egg smell are common in Ottawa-area well water. Here's what causes them and how to treat iron and sulphur for good.
Orange rings in the toilet tank, rust-coloured streaks in the tub, and a whiff of rotten eggs when you run the hot tap are the three complaints we hear most from well water homes around Ottawa. They are unpleasant, they are stubborn, and they are almost always fixable once you know which of them you actually have.
Why wells around Ottawa carry iron and sulphur
Groundwater in the townships around the city moves through limestone and glacial deposits before it ever reaches your pump. Along the way it picks up dissolved minerals, and iron and manganese are among the most common. Wells in Manotick, Greely, Osgoode, Carp, Russell, Rockland and North Grenville routinely test with measurable iron, often alongside genuine hardness in the 15 to 30 grains per gallon range.
Sulphur is a different mechanism. The smell comes from hydrogen sulphide gas, produced either by naturally occurring sulphur bacteria in the well or, quite often, by a reaction inside the water heater itself. That is why some homes only notice it on the hot side.
Telling iron, manganese and sulphur apart
Orange or reddish-brown staining in sinks, tubs and toilets is iron. Dark brown or almost black staining is manganese, which behaves similarly but needs a slightly different approach and lower treatment thresholds. A metallic taste usually accompanies both.
Clear water that turns orange after sitting in a glass for a few minutes is dissolved ferrous iron, which oxidises on contact with air. Water that is already tinted coming out of the tap is ferric iron, meaning it has oxidised in the well or the pipes and is now a particle you can filter.
The rotten-egg odour is hydrogen sulphide. If you smell it only on hot water, suspect the anode rod in the water heater. If it is on both hot and cold, the source is the well.
Why a softener alone is the wrong first move
A softener removes hardness by ion exchange, and it will strip a small amount of iron along the way. That is exactly what makes it a trap. Put a softener in front of a real iron problem and the resin bed fouls, the capacity drops, the staining creeps back, and within a year the system needs to be stripped and rebedded.
Correcting that mistake is one of the more common service calls we take. Iron and sulphur come out first. Softening happens after.
The treatment sequence that actually works
Start with sediment. A properly sized sediment stage with pressure gauges catches silt and already-oxidised ferric iron and protects everything downstream. Gauges matter, because a growing pressure difference tells you the cartridge is loading up before your shower pressure drops.
Next comes oxidation and filtration. This is the stage that handles dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide together: the contaminant is oxidised into a particle and then trapped in the filter media, which backwashes itself on a set schedule. A correctly sized iron and sulphur removal system is what clears both the staining and the smell for good, and it is the piece most often missing in homes that are still fighting the problem.
Softening comes third. With iron off the water, a whole home water softener can do the job it is designed for, resin lasts as long as it should, and salt use stays predictable.

Sizing depends on the numbers, not the symptoms
Iron above roughly 0.3 mg/L stains. Manganese stains at about a fifth of that. Hydrogen sulphide is noticeable to most people well below 1 mg/L. Beyond concentration, pH matters, because oxidation slows in acidic water, and so does the household's peak flow rate, because a filter that cannot keep up with two showers and a dishwasher will let untreated water slip past.
That is why we test on site rather than quoting from a phone call. The same rusty stain can mean two very different systems depending on the reading.
Keeping it working
Book a bacteriological test each spring through your public health unit, and after any flooding or well work. Watch your sediment pressure gauges. Keep the brine tank topped up. Shock chlorinate the well if bacteria show up. Note what normal pressure and flow feel like in your house, so a change registers early.
The honest bottom line
Rusty stains and a rotten-egg smell are not something you have to live with, and they are not a reason to be sold a softener on the spot. Treat the iron and sulphur first, size the equipment from your own water test, and the rest falls into place.
