Ottawa Hard Water Explained: What's Really in Your Tap
How hard is Ottawa's water, why rural wells are a different story, and what the numbers on a water test actually mean for your home.
Ask ten Ottawa homeowners about their water and you will get ten different answers. That is because Ottawa is really two water stories in one city: the municipal supply drawn and treated from the Ottawa River, and the thousands of private wells in the townships that surround the urban core.
The municipal picture
Water treated at the Britannia and Lemieux Island plants typically leaves at roughly 30 to 40 mg/L of hardness, which sits in the soft to moderately hard range. That is far gentler than what homeowners in, say, southwestern Ontario deal with. What city residents notice instead is chlorine taste and odour, seasonal changes in flavour, and the effect of older interior plumbing on colour and sediment.
The well water picture
Step outside the serviced area and the numbers change dramatically. Wells around Manotick, Greely, Osgoode, Carp and North Grenville draw through limestone and often test between 15 and 30 grains per gallon, which is genuinely hard water. Iron and manganese are common, and some properties carry the sulphur smell that comes from hydrogen sulphide.
Reading a water test
A useful test tells you hardness, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids and, for wells, bacteria. Hardness dictates whether you need softening and how large the system should be. Iron determines whether you need a dedicated iron stage ahead of the softener. Total dissolved solids tell you whether reverse osmosis will meaningfully improve drinking water.
What we recommend
For most homes on city water, carbon filtration for taste and odour plus a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink solves the complaints people actually have. For well water homes, sediment and iron handling comes first, then softening sized to the hardness reading. Nobody should be sold equipment before their water has been tested.
